Calls for Fringe events to be added to Belfast Festival

As the Belfast Festival kicks off for another year, a group of local actors and dramatists are calling for a ‘Fringe’ version of the event to be set up as well.

The call has been made by the Fringe Benefits Theatre Company, which will be holding a special demonstration at St George’s Market tomorrow.

The event will include a range of weird and wonderful fringe acts from the ‘Tree People’ to ‘Horror Scopes’ with improvised sketches, storytelling and music.

“Belfast needs a fringe festival to eventually rival that of Edinburgh, where the fringe is now bigger than the main festival,” said Cathy McCullough, chair of the company .

“A fringe festival would open the doors to a whole spectrum of audience participation and provide a wide platform of arts for the whole community to join in the festivities.”

The company will also hold a ‘Fringe Parade’ of their acts at 11am, from its base at the Crescent Arts Centre to St George’s Market.
