Bright and blue with Belfast views
The Blue Glass Wine Bar, The Four Winds, Newton Park, Belfast.
Friday, 4 July 2008
There's been a Four Winds bar on this site for as long as I can remember
although the previous building's vibe and design was very different to
what's there now.
What's the vibe?
There's been a Four Winds bar on this site for as long as I can remember
although the previous building's vibe and design was very different to
what's there now. In the past it was very much a dark and smoky sports bar
for the boys but now, in keeping with the times, it's a bright and welcoming
wine bar catering for the densely populated surrounding area. From the
outside, particularly when lit up at night, angular glass structure looks a
bit like a space ship. Inside the Blue Glass Wine bar is spacious with
plenty of seating and the glass windows allow brilliant glimpses of Belfast
city centre.
What's on offer?
There's a great cocktail list and a decent selection of the usual beers,
wines and spirits. Some punters have mumbled about the rising prices but
really they're much in keeping with everywhere else. There's also food
served in the bar although the selection isn't vast and can be hit and miss.
Who can you expect to bump into?
The bar is in the middle of several housing developments and is a popular
spot for residents. During the week the bar is busy with families, couples
and friends out for a leisurely glass of wine and bite to eat. At the
weekends, the cocktails make it a good first port of call for a girls' night
out before heading into town. Live music events and pub quizzes mean the
bar's never short of clientle across a good section of age groups.
What are they wearing?
Glammed up at weekends and smart casual any other time. It's not a pub, it's
a wine bar so scruffy doesn't go down well. Even on a Tuesday evening there
was a doorman on patrol ready to weed out any undesirables.
Overheard?
Oooooh, shall we have a cheeky cocktail?
What to say?
This place is a world away from the old bar that was here.
What not to say?
Don't you think it looks a bit like an airport lounge?
