London named world's top city for vegetarian cuisine

Monday, 7 December 2009

London was declared the top city for meat-free dining in a survey of the world's best hubs for vegetarian foodies.

Campaign group People for the Ethical treatment of Animals (Peta) cited the variety of cuisine choices and number of vegan options available in giving the UK capital the nod over its global rivals.

Mayor Boris Johnson welcomed the accolade, noting the city's "noble history of vegetarianism". Likewise Sir Paul McCartney, who today launches a new Peta campaign exposing the meat industry, paid tribute to what London had to offer to the meat-free diner.

The 67-year-old former Beatle said: "After 40 years of touring as a vegetarian, I'm proud to say that when it comes to eating, there's no place like home."

Peta said London's numerous vegetarian restaurants and its massive variety of meatless ethnic cuisine led to it triumphing over all other cities.

It also noted the fact that shops, restaurants and even steakhouses promote vegan options with a "V" on the menus and labels.

In being named most vegetarian friendly city in the world, London triumphed over Peta's other top five locales; Los Angeles, New York, Melbourne and Mumbai.

Mayor Johnson said: "London has soared to the top of the world's culinary league tables in recent years, boasting a mind-boggling range of eateries.

"We have a noble history of vegetarianism, so it is great news to be crowned the best city on earth to enjoy meat-free nosh."

He added: "We are helping to cultivate a taste for all things veggie by supporting green-fingered efforts by all Londoners to grow their own fresh fruit and veg."

The city has long been associated with vegetarianism, with immigration bringing in new cuisine to cater for a meat-free diet in recent decades.

London's first Vegetarian Society was formed in the mid 19th century. Since then Greek falafel and humus and Indian vegetarian curry are amongst the culinary experiences offered to Londoners.

Coinciding with the announcement, Peta today launched a new video hosted by Sir Paul exposing what happens in factory farms and the contribution of the meat industry to global carbon emission.

The musician said: "People ask me every day why I became a vegetarian and I felt that in this case - unlike in my songs - images speak louder than words."
