A record number of Northern Ireland restaurants have been featured in what is recognised as the industry’s most prestigious guide.
The news comes amid fears the recession and the tough economic climate may have led to survival problems for food businesses everywhere.
And it’s a feather in the cap of our local eateries in terms of quality, as only the chosen few are deemed good enough to be selected for review in the Michelin guide.
The stars the secretive reviewers award are widely considered to be the highest possible honour in the restaurant industry.
Among the establishments of note in Belfast, a total of 11 restaurants are recognised in this esteemed bible for foodies — the biggest number of local entries ever.
Top of the local list is Deanes, which compounded its reputation by retaining its Michelin star.
In addition, Paul Rankin’s Cayenne has been awarded a Bib Gourmand, which recognises good food at moderate prices.
Also making a debut appearance in this year’s guide is relative newcomer No 27 Talbot Street. Having only opened its doors in late 2007, this new kid on the Cathedral Quarter block has firmly established itself as a popular venue.
Its owner Adrian Lowry, who has been in the business for two decades, said the accolades prove how far local cuisine has come over the years.
“The sheer number of restaurants from Belfast alone that feature in this prestigious guide is testimony to the wealth of choice of high quality restaurants that exist in Belfast today,” he said.
