3D Lion King to close film festival

The first 3D screening of Disney classic The Lion King is to be shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The new additional to the 12-day event, which will host big names such as Ewan McGregor, Sex And The City's Kim Cattrall and Kings of Leon, was announced as the festival prepared to get underway.

Now in its 65th year, the programme adds outdoor screenings and a bike-powered mobile cinema to the line-up to help invigorate the festival for a modern audience.

Under the control of new director James Mullighan, this year's festival has moved away from the high-profile, red-carpet world premieres of previous years but some of the films' stars are expected to attend.

The UK premiere of John Michael McDonagh's Irish comedy-thriller The Guard, starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, opens the festival.

The event finale will be The Lion King in Disney Digital 3D in the Festival Theatre before its cinema release on October 14.

The festival's director said: "The Lion King is a favourite amongst children and adults alike and we're thrilled to be premiering The Lion King in 3D at EIFF. This year's focus has been to offer something for everyone, and our closing weekend including the Kings of Leon and the Lion King certainly achieves that."

Talihina Sky is a film charting the history of the Kings of Leon which receives its European premiere at the festival. All four band members will attend the screening.

Another highlight is the UK premiere of David Mackenzie's Glasgow-set sci-fi thriller Perfect Sense, starring Scottish actor Ewan and Eva Green, while Keith Bearden's new film Meet Monica Velour stars Kim, who is expected to attend the screening next week.

The festival runs until June 26.
