Andre Holland for Luther King film

Andre Holland is joining the cast of Martin Luther King Jr drama Selma.

The 42 actor will play politician and activist Andrew Young in the film about the civil rights marches of 1965, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.

The Butler star David Oyelowo is on board to play Martin Luther King Jr in the movie, which counts Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey among the producers.

Ava DuVernay will direct Selma, which follows Martin Luther King Jr's landmark 1965 voting rights campaign.

Carmen Ejogo will take on the role of Coretta Scott King and Tom Wilkinson will play President Lyndon B Johnson, a role previously linked to Liam Neeson.

The film focuses on the freedom marches of black Americans, who attempted to walk from Selma to Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, in 1965 in order to gain voting rights, only to be beaten back by police. It took the organisers three attempts to make the journey, with the number of marchers growing every time.

Andrew Jackson Young moved to Atlanta in 1961 and became executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He worked closely with King during the civil rights movement and was with King in Memphis when he was assassinated in 1968.
