Anthony Mackie to play Jimi Hendrix

Anthony Mackie is to star as Jimi Hendrix in a film about the last nine days of the rock star's life.

The film, now titled Jimi, has been in the works for several years and was previously known as Crosstown Traffic, Deadline reported.

Ol Parker will direct from his own screenplay, with his wife Thandie Newton set to star opposite Anthony, known for his role as Falcon in Captain America: Winter Soldier and for his role in Oscar-winning war film The Hurt Locker.

American rocker Hendrix died in London in 1970 from an apparent drugs overdose, aged just 27.

Noomi Rapace is in talks for a supporting role - thought to be that of Hendrix's ex-girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, who the Swedish star closely resembles.

The film previously had Paul Greengrass attached to direct, with Anthony in the starring role, but the project fell apart in 2010 following objections from Hendrix's estate over the script's portrayal of the rock star.

The production is said to be one of the hottest films being sold at the Cannes Film Festival, although a start date for shooting is not yet known.

Outkast star Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, is to star as the guitar legend in the biopic All Is By My Side, due out this summer.
