Apes trump Transformers worldwide

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has ended Transformers: Age Of Extinction's international box office rule.

Apes definitely had the evolutionary advancement over Autobots, as t he sci-fi sequel, starring Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, r acked up 54.4 million US dollars (£32 million) in over 60 countries, reported Screen Daily.

Matt Reeves' film also enjoyed strong openings in South American countries Mexico and Brazil, as well as in the UK and Russia.

Globally, Chinese film The Continent took third place, followed by Brett Ratner's Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson with DreamWorks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon 2 rounding out the top five.

Meanwhile, Luc Besson's Lucy proved mind can overpower muscle, after it defeated the Hercules remake to top the US box office.

According to studio estimates, the Universal Pictures-released movie starring Scarlett Johansson as an accidental psychokinetic took in 44 million US dollars (£25.8 million) in North American movie cinemas over the weekend, while Hercules muscled into second place with an estimated 29 million US dollars (£17 million).

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes took the third spot, followed by Transformers: Age Of Extinction and The Purge: Anarchy in the top five.
