Arnie: Even heroes can have flaws
Arnold Schwarzenegger has revealed he was drawn to new film Sabotage because he wanted to play more than just an action hero.
The 66-year-old Terminator actor stars in the gory revenge thriller as Breacher, the head of a DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) SWAT team, who is tempted into a scheme to steal drugs money from a cartel.
Arnie revealed: "I enjoyed doing the movie because it was not a typical action movie, he was like a flawed hero.
"Most films I play a hero that is the good guy who wipes out the bad guy, it's very clean cut.
"And this one it's a much more complex character. It's someone who starts out as this heroic guy, and is the leader of this DEA SWAT team.
"But as they start infiltrating the cartel, there's revenge and they not only whack my own guys but they also wipe out my family.
"And so that's when he decided to cross the line himself and get into this dark world."
The revenge thriller boasts a stellar cast including Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, Terrence Howard and Mireille Enos, and Arnie matches his younger co-stars in strength and fitness.
The former bodybuilder insisted physical fitness is not something he is prepared to compromise on, even in his sixties.
"It's not harder because you can use lighter weights," he insisted.
"But the key thing is no matter how old you are you always have to work out. It's like you always eat, you always sleep, you always do all those things. So therefore you always work out , and you always try to stay in shape.
"Especially if you're interested in doing action movies and playing a heroic character you better be in shape."
:: Sabotage is released in cinemas on Wednesday May 7.
