Belfast's Hollyoaks star Gerard McCarthy will battle it out tonight for the Newcomer title at this year's British Soap Awards.

But even if the young star fails to pick up the coveted gong, at least he's going to look the part.

For west Belfast actor Gerard, will be stepping out in his new designer suit - his first big purchase since landing his dream role last year.

The 25-year-old, who plays controversial cross-dressing student Kris Fisher in the teen soap, said: "I'm just on my way out to buy a suit carrier because my mum's been warning me not to get it creased. I'm wearing a lovely dark blue Armani suit, which I bought in Carter in Belfast, and a white pin-striped shirt.

"The suit is the first thing I bought when I got my first pay cheque from Hollyoaks. People normally buy things like a new car, but as I can't drive, I decided to go for the suit instead."

Gerard, who has now started his driving lessons while home on holidays, is up against his good friend, Coronation Street star Kym Ryder. Both are hot tips to win in their category.

He said: "I wasn't nervous at all, but then Kym rang me and told me she was really nervous.

"I don't know why she is, she's done all this before, but it's made me a bit jittery now. But I'm really looking forward to it. All the cast of Hollyoaks are going to be there and we've been nominated in every category, so hopefully we'll come away with some awards."

But he hasn't prepared a speech.

"I don't think I'm going to win, but it's great to be nominated and who knows what will happen on the night."
