Baron Cohen plays Les Mis villain?

Sacha Baron Cohen is currently starring in animated film Hugo

Sacha Baron Cohen has reportedly been cast in the new film adaptation of musical Les Miserables.

The Borat star is set to play evil villain Monsieur Thenardier in the big screen version - the role played by fellow funnyman Matt Lucas in the West End - The Sun reports.

Matt tweeted: "Sacha will be amazing in the Les Mis movie. He's the funniest man in the world and a good friend. Am excited to see his Thenardier."

Russell Crowe will star as vengeful police inspector Javert opposite Hugh Jackman as reformed prisoner Jean Valjean in the musical based on Victor Hugo's epic French novel.

The King's Speech's Tom Hooper is directing the film, produced by Cameron Mackintosh, which is due to start shooting in the New Year.

Anne Hathaway will star as Fantine and Helena Bonham Carter is set to play Madame Thenardier.

Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Evan Rachel Wood are reportedly competing to play Eponine.

In the Victor Hugo novel, Eponine falls in love with Marius, to be played in the film by Eddie Redmayne, and dies trying to save his life.

Sacha - who plays the intimidating Station Inspector in Martin Scorsese's new 3D adventure Hugo - will appear in his new comedy The Dictator, due out next year.
