Battlestar Galactica is reportedly heading to the big screen.
According to Variety, Universal is making preparations for a movie version of the sci-fi franchise, that will feature a complete re-imagining of the story.
The sci-fi TV show follows the only surviving crew of humans from a military battle in a distant universe, searching for Earth to take refuge.
There have been three series of the show - the first, starring Lorne Greene and Richard Hatch, ran from 1978-9, followed by a short-lived spin-off called Galactica in 1980.
In 2003, a reimagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries aired on the Sci-Fi channel (now Syfy). This was extended into a series starring Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Jamie Bamber and went on to run for four seasons.
Transcendence writer Jack Paglen has signed on to write the screenplay for the new movie and o riginal series creator Glen Larson will produce the film.
In 2009, speculation emerged that Bryan Singer was attached to direct a Battlestar Galactica movie.
