Bay tells turtles fans to relax
Michael Bay has asked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans to "relax" until they have seen the script of his new movie.
The Transformers director is producing a revival of the hit 90s martial arts movie franchise, which has sparked online protests from outraged fans after Bay said: "These turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable."
His mention of an "alien race" implies he is not sticking to the plot of the original 80s cartoon story that martial arts experts Raphael, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo mutated from normal turtles after coming into contact with a strange "ooze" in the New York sewer.
But Bay said in a statement: "Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story.
"Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."
One of the angry fans posting online includes Robbie Rist, who voiced Michaelangelo in the original film.
He wrote in an open letter to Bay: "I know believing in mutated talking turtles is kinda silly to begin with but am I supposed to be led to believe there are ninjas from another planet?"
