Black gets started on Doc Savage

Shane Black is bringing comic book hero Doc Savage to the big screen

Shane Black has got the go ahead to make his latest comic adaptation, Doc Savage.

The Iron Man 3 director has signed with Sony to write and direct the film, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Shane had originally started work on the screenplay in 2009, but Iron Man 3 took over his directing focus.

Now he's concentrating on one of his favourite comic book heroes, Doc Savage, which Sony plans to make its next big franchise.

Sony's president of production Hannah Minghella said: "We couldn't be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team.

"Shane and Neal have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can't wait to get this production up and running."

Doc Savage was a popular hero in the 1930s and 1940s and was also known as the Man In Bronze.

He had almost limitless skills - surgeon, scientist, inventor and a master of disguise, with superhuman strength. With his helpers he fought villains from their office in the Empire State Building.

Doc Savage superfan Shane apparently has the original magazines on his book shelves at home.

Warner Bros made a movie of the character in 1975 which starred Tarzan actor Ron Ely.
