Bobby Sands film wins prestigious prize at Cannes

Monday, 26 May 2008

A biopic telling the story of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands has won a prestigious prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hunger, which was co-written by Enda Walshe and stars Liam Cunningham and Michael Fassbender, picked up the Camera d'Or for the best first-time feature film at last night's closing ceremony.

It is expected to go on cinema release later this year.

Fassbender has already been widely praised for his portrayal of Bobby Sands' demise during the 66-day hunger strike that claimed his life in 1981.

Director Steve McQueen said: "The film is about people in a situation of extreme pressure and what people do and what we do."
