James Bond and The Hobbit have helped boost profits at MGM Holdings.

Variety said that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's parent company reported third quarter earnings of 17 million dollars, up 23 million dollars year on year, partly thanks to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and 007 adventure Skyfall.

Released in 2012, Skyfall, directed by Sam Mendes, was a critical and box office hit.

Directed by Peter Jackson, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) was the first instalment in the three-part film adaptation of JRR Tolkien's 1937 novel.

"We had another impressive quarter and are extremely pleased with our results year to date, which show the earnings power of our growing fresh content pipeline in both film and television." said MGM's Gary Barber.
