Brendan Gleeson's new film snapped up in €1m deal

By Jason O'Brien

A new Irish film starring Brendan Gleeson is one of the biggest successes from this year's Sundance Festival, securing a €1m rights deal in the US.

'The Guard', which is written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, opened the prestigious festival -- established by Hollywood icon Robert Redford -- last week.

The film stars Gleeson as an unorthodox garda who joins forces with Don Cheadle, a strait-laced FBI agent, in a bid to tackle an international drug-smuggling gang.

Sony Pictures has now bought the distribution rights for both the US and Latin America for a seven-figure sum after something of a bidding war following the film's premiere at the Utah festival.

The deal means the film has been sold in every major territory in the world, and will be seen by international audiences later this year.
