Cambell Bower: Fan reaction hurt me

Jamie Campbell Bower says the initial reaction to his casting in The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones hurt him

Jamie Campbell Bower has confessed he was hurt and angered by fans initial reaction to him being cast in The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones film.

The Twilight star plays Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the film adaptation of the first book of Cassandra Clare's teen fantasy series. When his casting was announced two years ago some fans took to the internet to complain he was not right for the part.

Jamie revealed: "Upon being cast I was very aware of a negative reaction from the fans. That reaction was based on image and looks alone and that was two-and-half-years ago.

"As an actor and a performer I'm very much aware of the fact that my job is to change both physically and emotionally, and that was what hurt the most, was that people were judging me on nothing. I get very emotional about this!"

The 24-year-old actor said he hoped people will learn that abusive messages online can be hurtful.

He said: "I get it. For some people, particularly with social media and the internet, there is no brain to hand coordination. People don't think. It's like this continuous diarrhoea and people don't really understand that that affects people.

"And I think that what has happened recently, particularly with young people, should show the fact that that is not acceptable in any way, shape or form.

"Next time, before you judge anyone, just think."

Jamie admitted the negative response did affect him somewhat, but he is now proud to have received a positive fan reaction too.

He said: "I have seen a change. I was very lucky to receive a book that was made by the fans and I look at it every day and I carry it with me and it's something I'm very grateful for. It's a book of posters people have made that say, 'Jamie is Jace', from around the world."
