Carell cast in gay rights film

Steve Carell is replacing Zach Galifianakis in gay rights drama Freeheld.

Zach was set to play Garden State Equality activist Steven Goldstein but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, reported Deadline, so Steve has stepped in.

The star apparently found he would have space for the movie in between promoting his upcoming films Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day and Foxcatcher.

Julianne Moore and Ellen Page will also star in Peter Sollett's Freeheld, about New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree, who battled along with her detective girlfriend Laurel Hester to try and secure Laurel's pension benefits after the policewoman was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

As they were in a lesbian relationship and not married in the eyes of the law, Stacie was not entitled to a widow's pension after her girlfriend's death.

Meanwhile, another of Steve's planned projects has moved forwards, as a new writer has been found to pen his mob comedy.

The Hollywood Reporter said Jeff Lock has been hired to write the latest draft of Our Thing.
