Catching Fire ignites in UK and US

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire stars Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson

Jennifer Lawrence's latest Hunger Games film Catching Fire has set the UK box office ablaze.

The second instalment in the franchise - which sees the actress star as Katniss Everdeen and follows teens who are forced to battle to the death - opened last week and took more than 12 million pounds over the course of the weekend.

It meant the film is Lionsgate UK's largest ever opening.

Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa said: "Katniss and the world of Panem has struck a chord with UK audiences and critics alike with results to substantiate that."

The film - which also stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth - also went down a storm in the US, where it debuted with 161.1 million US dollars (£99.2 million) at the box office, setting a record for a November opening.

The result fell short of some expectations, and failed to dethrone the year's biggest box office opening of 174 million dollars (£107 million) for Iron Man 3.

But it did beat the previous top November opening of 142.9 million dollars (£87.6 million) by Twilight Saga: New Moon.
