Child: Cruise captured Reacher well

Tom Cruise captured Jack Reacher 'beautifully', according to author Lee Child

Tom Cruise epitomised the character of Jack Reacher "beautifully", author Lee Child has revealed.

The Hollywood star, who portrayed Child's famous protagonist in the film, looks physically different to the lead character in the books, who is described as 6'5" tall with a 50-inch chest, weighing between 220 and 250 pounds with ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair.

But the writer said Tom captured Jack's spirit perfectly: "Clearly we gave up an exact physical representation; what we got in exchange was 100 per cent of the attitude and the mood.

"I always picture Reacher as being relatively impatient. He's spent his whole life waiting for the world to catch up with him, and I think Tom Cruise pulled that off beautifully."

Lee admitted he hasn't heard about a sequel to Jack Reacher yet.

"We haven't really heard anything definitive because these things are slow to decide, and it's a question of somebody eventually pulling the trigger," he explained.

"Clearly they went into it with the idea of it being a series of three or four, and there's nothing about the first one to suggest that it should be derailed. The first one did well, it was profitable, and in many ways the second one will be easier because they already did the heavy lifting on the first one."

The author made a cameo as a cop in the film, which is available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download now.

"That was fun. It was a Alfred Hitchcock type of thing. I didn't want to ask to do it, because I didn't want to be that uncool, but I was really glad when they offered it, and they insisted," he said.
