Coltrane joins Great Expectations

Robbie Coltrane has been cast as Mr Jaggers in Great Expectations

Robbie Coltrane is joining the new film adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations as orphan Pip's legal guardian Mr Jaggers.

The Cracker star is to be reunited with Harry Potter co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes in the film, which begins shooting in London in October.

Producer Elizabeth Karlsen told The Daily Mail she knew Coltrane was the man to play the imposing Mr Jaggers as soon as he walked into the hotel foyer where they were meeting to discuss the role.

She said: "The command he had of the room was astonishing."

Sally Hawkins is also joining the cast as Pip's sister Mrs Joe Gargery, while her blacksmith husband will be played by Jason Flemyng.

Helena will play Miss Havisham and Ralph has been cast as villain Magwitch. Jeremy Irvine - who stars in Spielberg's film version of War Horse - will star as Pip and The Scouting Book For Boys' Holliday Grainger will play Estella.

The film, directed by Mike Newell and based on a script by David Nicholls, is being produced by the BBC to mark the bicentenary of writer Charles Dickens' birth next year.
