Copley: Old Boy driven by passion

Sharlto Copley says the Old Boy remake is being done for creative rather than commercial reasons

Sharlto Copley has defended his new Old Boy film from criticism that there isn't a need for a remake.

The films currently exist as a South Korean revenge trilogy and the new movie, directed by Spike Lee, has been adapted from the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi.

Sharlto, who is currently shooting the manga adaptation in New Orleans, told Empire that the film wasn't being made for commercial reasons.

"Something like this only comes along very rarely, and it seems perfectly reasonable to have a re-imagining of it," he said.

"Very often Hollywood will remake something just because there's a built-in audience, just for the commercial aspect of doing it. That's fair enough, I guess. But with this, if you look at the people who have got involved, it's more for the creative drive."

He added: "It's not a massive franchise that you're trying to reboot, or something that's going to make a gazillion dollars. It's just a film that's artistically inspiring to people."

You have to make some personal sacrifices to achieve career success. If you're going to lead a team to victory, you will have to be hard on the less industrious members of the group. As a result, you won't be terribly popular. Many will complain about your methods, but nobody can argue with the results of your work. You know how to get the best performance from the people around you. That's a rare quality that should be championed. You should be gentler with people in your private life.More
