Coppola to direct Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola is in talks to direct the live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

The Bling Ring filmmaker had been in negotiations to take the reins on the new adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale for Universal Pictures and Working Title, reported Deadline.

Joe Wright, who directed Atonement, was previously in considerations to direct it.

Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride) is working on the latest version of the script, following on from drafts by Saving Mr Banks' Kelly Marcel and The Iron Lady's Abi Morgan.

The Little Mermaid would mark a departure for mother-of-two Sofia, who focused on adult themes in her past films such as Somewhere, Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides.
