Costner jumps in for McFarland film

Kevin Costner has signed on to star in sports drama McFarland.

The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who had been in talks to join since last summer, has "closed a deal" to take the lead role in the upcoming Disney movie, to be directed by Niki Caro, reported Variety.

Based on a true story, Kevin is to play a coach living in a predominantly Hispanic California town in the 80s, who developed a high school track team, overcoming social and physical hurdles to become champions.

It is the latest sporting role for Kevin, following his turns in Oscar-nominated baseball drama Field Of Dreams, golfing film Tin Cup, baseball movie For The Love Of The Game and the forthcoming Draft Day about American football.

The 58-year-old has seen his career revived with the huge success of the History Channel miniseries Hatfields and McCoys, which won him an Emmy for outstanding lead actor. He has also returned to the big screen with roles in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man Of Steel and the upcoming Jack Ryan.

He is filming indie drama Black And White in New Orleans with Octavia Spencer.
