Cotillard to play Lady Macbeth

Marion Cotillard has been signed up to replace Natalie Portman as Lady Macbeth in a new big screen adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy.

Michael Fassbender is set to star as the tragic anti-hero in the new film directed by Snowtown's Justin Kurzel, and in May it was reported Natalie would be his leading lady.

But now Deadline has revealed Oscar-winning French actress Marion will play the ambitious wife of the Scottish Lord.

It was previously reported that Natalie had long wanted to play the role of Lady Macbeth, and to work with Irish hunk Michael.

The project, which has been adapted for the screen by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff, was one of the most in-demand ahead of the Cannes Film Festival.

Set in the 11th century, it is said be "a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes".

Filming is due to start in January 2014.
