Dad's Army remake to hit big screen

Dad's Army is reportedly being remade for the big screen

A film version of Dad's Army is apparently in the works - with Captain Mainwaring to be played by a woman.

The Independent reported that the show's co-writer Jimmy Perry revealed to members of the Dad's Army official fan club that a new film version is in the early stages of development.

The studio behind the project have hinted to the writer that they want the lead role of the pompous Captain Mainwaring, played by the late Arthur Lowe in the classic sitcom, to go to a woman, the newspaper said.

The original Dad's Army - which followed the British military's Home Guard during the Second World War - was broadcast on BBC One between 1968 and 1977.

This will not be the first Dad's Army movie - a feature film spin-off was released in 1971.

Clive Dunn - who played Corporal Jones in the sitcom - died last week at the age of 92 .
