David Lynch is moving in to the music world and hoping to crack the charts after teaming up with a Radio 1 DJ.

The Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive film-maker is the vocalist on the record released through broadcaster and Bestival organiser Rob da Bank's label Sunday Best Recordings.

The left-field director, who has become known for championing transcendental meditation, is releasing two tracks, Good Day Today and I Know this week.

An early airing of the track on a Los Angeles radio station prompted speculation about the mystery artist behind it, when it was mistakenly credited on-air to British dance act Underworld.

Lynch, now 64, is not a complete novice in the music world. He has written and produced material for Julee Cruise - with whom he worked on his cult TV series Twin Peaks - and has collaborated with producer Danger Mouse and the late musician Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse.

Lynch said: "In all my films, I have always been very involved with all that one hears. The creation of the record was a natural extension of my love of sound and music."

Da Bank founded his label in 1995 and has released albums by artists such as Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip and Kitty, Daisy And Lewis.

He said: "If I hadn't just pinched myself I'd swear I was dreaming that we're actually putting out a record by David Lynch."

A further release in January will feature artwork from acclaimed British designer Vaughan Oliver - known for his work with the 4AD label, designing sleeves for acts such as Pixies and This Mortal Coil.
