Day-Lewis 'unique among actors'

Daniel Day-Lewis has impressed his Lincoln co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Daniel Day-Lewis is "a global treasure", according to his Lincoln co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The 3rd Rock From The Sun star plays Robert Lincoln, the son of US President Abraham Lincoln in the film, with Daniel taking on the leading role.

At the film's LA gala screening, Joseph said: "He's a global treasure. Daniel's unique amongst living actors and it was such a privilege to get to participate."

Joseph, who recently appeared in The Dark Knight Rises, praised the film for challenging conceptions of the famed political giant.

He said: "Abraham Lincoln in our culture, in the United States, he's such a hero, you sort of figure that he did everything right. But he didn't and I love this movie for not shying away from that, and one of the ways this movie shows that is by showing the relationship with his son, which was a strange one."

He added: "I learned as much as the next guy about him (at school). It's a fascinating part of our country's history, the civil war and reconstruction, the end of slavery. I didn't know anything about Robert Lincoln, the character I play, who's Abraham Lincoln's eldest son, so that was interesting to learn about."
