De Niro to head Cannes film jury

Robert De Niro will head a nine-strong jury at the Cannes Film Festival

Robert De Niro is set to head the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The Godfather actor will lead a nine-member jury for the famous May festival on the French Riviera.

In a statement released by Cannes organisers, the star said the invitation was "a rare opportunity" he felt honoured by.

De Niro is currently enjoying box office success with Little Fockers, the latest instalment in Ben Stiller's popular Meet The Parents franchise.

The Thai film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the top honour in Cannes in 2010, while Academy Award winners Juliette Binoche and Javier Bardem earned acting honours.

This year's festival takes place from May 11 to 22.
