Denzel Washington looks set to play a contract killer in a new movie.

The Oscar-winner is currently in early talks about taking on the part in Shovel Ready, reported Deadline.

The post-apocalyptic movie will be adapted from journalist Adam Sternbergh's book - which has not yet been released - but is still in the early stages, with no director attached.

It is set in a devastated future New York City where "most of the population escapes reality by tapping into a digital fantasy world".

Flight star Denzel, 58, is in talks about the part of an assassin who is hired to kill the daughter of a powerful evangelist, but comes to be her protector. So far it's not known who would play the girl.

The actor can soon be seen in action/crime comedy 2 Guns.
