Depp to thrill in Transcendence?

Johnny Depp is in talks to star in Wally Pfister's film

Johnny Depp is in talks to star in new sci-fi thriller Transcendence.

The highly anticipated project is the directorial debut from Wally Pfister, the director of cinematography on Inception, and the film is being described as in a similar vein to Inception and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Hollywood Reporter claimed that according to sources, Depp will get a massive payout for the role - at least 20 million dollars, or 15 per cent of the gross profits, if that comes to more than 20 million.

The film tells the story of a man who creates a computer that develops an evil life of its own, and Depp will play a husband who becomes sucked into the computer. Wally is still adjusting the script and the plot is being kept top secret.

Wally said: "I'm thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny. He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative."

The director is said to have met Noomi Rapace about the role of Depp's wife and is considering James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire for other male lead. Christoph Waltz has also been offered a supporting role.

The film is due to begin shooting next year.

Wallty's longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan is executive producing and Warner Bros will distribute the movie.
