Derry to star in soap as Hollyoaks arrives for shoot

Sham marriage is at the centre of a Hollyoaks storyline being filmed in Londonderry today.

Five key members of the cast will be in the city for five days as Lime Pictures, the company which produces Hollyoaks, films an exciting new storyline featuring some of the main characters.

The plot being filmed this week is involves Phoebe McQueen (Mandip Gill) and Vincent Elegba (John Omole).

The couple visit to get married in a desperate bid to keep Vincent in the UK – although how it turns out remains a secret.

Hollyoaks was devised by Phil Redmond, the man who chaired the panel of judges that named Derry the UK's first City of Culture.

And the show has used actors from Northern Ireland throughout its 18 years, including Coleraine's Bronagh Waugh and Belfast's Gerard McCarthy.

The Hollyoaks shoot will be filming at prominent, recognisable landmarks in the city .

Shona McCarthy, chief executive of Culture Company 2013, said: "Having Hollyoaks in town will provide a great platform for showing Derry-Londonderry to a new young audience.

"The city is looking so fantastic at the minute I'm sure it's going to shine like a real star of the show when the storyline airs on Channel 4 later this autumn."

A Lime Pictures spokesman said: "Hollyoaks is known for its exciting storylines that often take viewers outside of the village and we are looking forward to shooting in Derry."
