Desperately supporting Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle in full flight on Britain's Got aTalent

Susan Boyle in full flight on Britain's Got aTalent

Susan Boyle remains the favourite to win Britain’s Got Talent tonight, despite rumours that she was set to quit the show this week.

The now world-famous Scot — who can count actress Demi Moore among her fans — is the bookies’ favourite to take home the £100,000 prize, and the chance to appear at the Royal Variety Performance later in the year.

There have been suggestions that Boyle’s popularity might be collapsing as result of her recent highly-publicised erratic behaviour. If that is to be reflected in the vote tonight, the likes of Aiden Davis (odds 7-1), Shaheen Jafargholi (15-2) and Stavros Flatly (10-1) appear the most likely to benefit.

According to Betfair 11-year-old dancer Aiden Davis is second favourite. Simon Cowell described him as the best dancer they have ever had on the show.

Betfair spokesman Andy Lulham said: “Susan Boyle has been the focus of the contest throughout and that has been reflected in the betting, with two-thirds of all bets on Betfair going on the Scottish singer.

“Over the last week there have been suggestions that she’s not as nailed-on as many had thought, but whether or not that will be reflected in the vote remains to be seen.”

To win Britain’s Got Talent 2009 – Betfair bet: 6-4 Susan Boyle, 7-1 Aiden Davies, 15-2 Shaheen Jafargholi, 10-1 Stavros Flatly, 12-1 Flawless, Diversity, 17-1 Julian Smith, 39-1 Shaun Smith, 45-1 Hollie Steel, 59-1 2 Grand, 69-1 Greg Pritchard

As concerns mounted for Boyle ahead of the final, Piers Morgan defended her and called on the public to get behind her.

Writing on his blog Morgan said: "My bet is that she will respond with the performance of her life at the final.

"This is one tough lady who has had to fight since the day she born, and there is no way she's going to quit now."

Meanwhile Britain's Got Talent bosses today rejected suggestions that the 48-year-old former charity worker from Blackburn West Lothian, might be axed from the show's final.

A spokeswoman for Britain's Got Talent said Boyle was receiving the support she needed from the show's producers.

"She just wants to focus on her performance, and the well-being of our contestants is our number one priority," she said.

Reports suggested she may be taken off the show amid fears she was not coping with the pressure of her new-found fame.

Boyle was propelled into the spotlight following her audition for the show, singing I Dreamed A Dream from the musical Les Miserables.

She went on to become a global internet sensation, scoring millions of hits on video site YouTube.

But it is understood Boyle has struggled to handle the attention and thought about quitting the show.

Maureen Coleman: My opinion

How fickle the public is. In a matter of weeks Scottish singer Susan Boyle went from zero to hero, only to feel the full force of the great British backlash.

Her crime, it seems, is that this eccentric lady who loves to sing has been acting somewhat erratically in the run-up to tonight’s final, even threatening to quit the show.

It’s called extreme pressure.

One minute the shy charity worker from West Lothian was high up on her Britian’s Got Talent pedestal, the next she’d come crashing down. Bookies are, however, still predicting that she’ll clinch the top prize, despite slashing their odds.

What’s happened to Susan Boyle over the last few weeks highlights everything that is wrong about exploitative shows like BGT. Sure, it makes good telly, but is that because we really believe these contestants are truly talented — or because we love to laugh at them and mock them in their misery?

Some of the acts through to tonight’s final deserve to be there — others are fairly average. Susan Boyle can sing — and is likely to be a star, no matter what the result.

Unless, that is, the great British public ensure otherwise.

My heart goes out to Susan. I wish I could give her a hug and shelter her from these awful media mongers. She's already a star no matter what and doesn't need to do anything rash -- the world can and will wait for people with a voice like hers. Mean people really do suck. Hang in there, Susan.

What joyous news - the public have a titter of wit after all.

Let's hope she fades as quickly into obscurity as she rose from it!

Amazing that my impression was so different about Susan's final performance! I thought she looked very stoic, no usual smiles during her song or lovely head bobs at the audience...and she only sang a small portion of her song...I felt almost that she chose to sing it out of protest for the inhumane treatment she has received...and that she wasn't really trying to win. Oh how I wanted her to win! May she never go away!

Not many voices can move me as does the voice of Susan Boyle. I truly pray that she will be rewarded for the many years she has spent in developing this wonderful gift to share with us all.

I am absolutely amazed at the reaction towards her voice. Yes, its nice, and she can hold a tune, but nothing more than you would hear in a karaoke bar, or a decent gospel choir.

Its called Britain's Got Talent, not "Britain's got really excited that an ordinary looking person can sing a wee bit"!

On the third semi-final, I constantly tried from a land line, to vote for a competitor (had no problems voting on the first two semi-finals). It was inpossible to connect.

However, I had just about finished dialling, when it was announced that the lines had closed, and within a micro-second I was connected.

I wish to vote for Susan Boyle, but am wondering if the same "block" will occur?

Susan, you have already won this contest no matter how anyone votes. Millions of us are lifelong fans, even who have never taken this kind of interest in anyone before. We like you for yourself as you are, and your singing is in a league with some of my all-time favorite greats--Peggy Lee, Perry Como, Doris Day, Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra. Some of comments about you reflect the ignorance of the speakers, and are not worth bothering with. Relax, have fun. Take care of yourself.

Susan Boyle makes my day. I listen to her at least twice every day. I get goose bumps and sometimes cry. I will buy her records when they come out. I will also buy the doll that I've heard is in the making. She simply makes me feel good. And, yes, I, too, love cats!

I think Susan is marvellous! Who wouldn't be a bit "jittery" after being a "no-one" then flung to celebrity status overnight?!
Susan, if you read this......you are a wonderful singer, may you go from strength to strength. Keep your feet firmly on the ground and be yourself. I am sure in time you will believe in yourself because you are fantastic!
