Drive inspires Gosling to direct

Ryan Gosling was inspired to try directing after starring in Drive

Ryan Gosling says his directorial debut was inspired by Christina Hendricks' death scene in a film they starred in together.

The pair both appeared in the 2011 film Drive and Ryan, 32, says Christina's performance influenced his first directing project, which she also stars in.

He told the New York Times that he was inspired by a screening of Drive at Cannes, where at the end of the scene, in which Christina's character suddenly dies, "the audience gave a standing ovation".

He said: "It was the strangest thing I'd ever been a part of, and in some way my movie is a bit about that experience."

Gangster Squad star Ryan is directing his first film, How To Catch A Monster, this year.

As well as Christina it will star Eva Mendes, who he is rumoured to be dating after they starred in The Place Beyond The Pines, due out on April 12.

Atonement star Saoirse Ronan and Dr Who Matt Smith have also been cast in How To Catch A Monster.

The film, which Ryan also wrote, is about a single mother swept into a dark underworld while her teenage son discovers a road leading to a secret underwater town.

Ryan told the New York Times he has also been inspired by Derek Cianfrance, who directed him in Blue Valentine and the upcoming The Place Beyond The Pines.

He said: "It's hard to explain the amount of effort I watch him put into making things look effortless."
