Eddie Redmayne has been cast as a caveman called Dug in the animated prehistoric comedy adventure movie Early Man.

The Oscar-winning actor will voice the "plucky" shaggy-haired caveman with a toothy grin in the new Aardman and Studiocanal stop-frame style film, alongside his sidekick Hognob.

This is not The Danish Girl star's first experience of voice acting, as he provided the voice of purple tank engine Ryan for the children's movie Thomas And Friends: Sodor's Legend Of The Lost Treasure.

Early Man is the brainchild of director and animator Nick Park, who is behind Shaun The Sheep and Oscar-winning movie Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.

Park said: "Not only is Eddie a joy to work with, his versatility and boundless energy have really helped to bring my new character to life.

"He embodies the cheeky charm, fun and plucky wit of Dug and I'm sure he'll get along brilliantly with Dug's sidekick Hognob."

Set in the time of dinosaurs and woolly mammoths, the film tells the story of how Dug unites his tribe against a mighty enemy and saves the day.

:: Early Man is scheduled for release on January 26 2018.
