Ejiofor: Hard to leave Slave role

Chiwetel Ejiofor has revealed it took him months to leave his 12 Years A Slave role behind.

The British actor plays Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841, in director Steve McQueen's film.

He told The Hollywood Reporter that he got so immersed in the emotional story and the character that it took some time before he could separate himself from it.

" My hope was that I'd be able to drop the whole thing, but that wasn't possible," said the actor.

"I ended up having to spend about two months, more or less on my own, just to try and come out of the experience."

Chiwetel - who stars alongside Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt in the film - also said he was honoured to have been involved in the project, which is garnering Oscar buzz.

"It was a privilege," he said.
