Elba misses premiere after illness

British actor Idris Elba had to be taken off a South Africa-bound plane and was rushed to hospital after suffering an asthma attack while on his way to the premiere of a Nelson Mandela film he stars in.

Elba, 41, missed a news conference in Johannesburg today to promote the film Mandela: A Long Walk of Freedom after being taken to hospital in the UK.

But the film's producer Anant Singh said he was expected to appear at a planned red carpet event on Sunday.

"Idris is in hospital after an asthma attack on the plane last night," Mr Singh told reporters at the press conference.

Elba stars alongside fellow British actor Naomie Harris in the film.

He is best known for playing drug lord Russell "Stringer" Bell in US TV series The Wire.

The film will be released in the UK on January 3.
