Elba's Mandela trailer unveiled

Idris Elba's performance as Nelson Mandela has been unveiled for the first time in an online teaser trailer for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

The Luther actor stars opposite Bond girl Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela in the biopic chronicling Mandela's life, from his childhood in a rural village to becoming the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

The trailer has had its world premiere on MSN movies, showing Elba as the freedom fighter walking through open countryside, surrounded by running, laughing children.

There is no close-up shot of how Elba will look as Mandela, but he is heard in a voice over, speaking in Mandela's accent, reciting from his autobiography A Long Walk To Freedom.

Elba has said what an honour it was to play the great leader.

He said: "It was an absolute honour for me. I can't wait for people to see the film and judge for themselves. But it's an important story and an important film."

The film is released in cinemas in January 2014.
