Emma Stone is set to star in filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's latest project.

The Spider-Man actress has joined the cast of Birdman alongside Batman star Michael Keaton and The Impossible's Naomi Watts, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

The dark comedy follows a former actor (Michael), who once played an iconic superhero, as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to regain his credibility.

Naomi will star as an actress in the play, while Emma will play the daughter of Michael's character.

The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis will play the producer of the stage show.

Production on Birdman is due to start next month.
