Emma Stone will always love comedy

Emma Stone plays femme fatale Grace in Gangster Squad

Emma Stone has said comedy will always be her first love.

The Amazing Spider-Man actress plays femme fatale Grace opposite Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling in the Prohibition era drama Gangster Squad.

She said her alter-ego, Grace, differed to many of her previous characters - because she needs a man.

The Crazy, Stupid Love star said: "I've always been really attracted to characters who are very self-assured, confident and don't need a man to validate them, but I think there was something in me that was interested in what the flipside is.

"Grace needs validation, she needs something from a man. She wanted to be a star and settled for being famous by proxy with a dangerous man."

Emma said: "Comedy's my true love. I don't think anything will ever compete with that for me.

"But I've been lucky to have the opportunity to do things out of that wheelhouse because I'm very interested in all different aspects of being an actor and being a person.

"And as I get older, I can understand different parts of the psyche in different ways."

:: Gangster Squad is in cinemas now.
