Ethan Hawke is to star alongside Colin Farrell in the remake of Total Recall.

Colin is stepping into Arnold Schwarzenegger's shoes as Doug Quaid in the remake penned by Kurt Wimmer and based on the Philip K Dick story, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.

Ethan has been confirmed for a cameo, but details are being kept secret, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kate Beckinsale has been offered the female lead of Lori. The Pearl Harbour star is married to the director, Len Wiseman, and has now been asked to take on the part, originally played by Sharon Stone in the 1990 action film.

Jessica Biel, Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are reported to be in negotiations for the role of Melina, the woman who helps freedom fighter Doug Quaid get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars.

The original movie followed Quaid as he bought a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc, which sells implanted memories, to try and escape a recurring dream of journeying to Mars.

He comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

The updated film is not about the Martian colony and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid a factory worker who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The movie is due to begin shooting in June.
