The Fantastic Four could be taking on The X-Men in a movie mash-up, it has been rumoured.
Fox are apparently planning to make a big screen adaptation of the 1987 comic series Fantastic Four vs The X-Men, The Hollywood Reporter has said.
It cites a Motley Fool report on outside studios taking advantage of Marvel Studios' success which claims that the double franchise film, which has been rumoured in the past, is further along in production than first thought.
The comic book story rewrites the origins of the Fantastic Four, saying that rather than the superheroes gaining their powers through an accident, it was actually an experiment carried out by team leader Reed Richards which brought them into conflict with villain Doctor Doom, and The X-Men who were working with him at the time.
Upcoming X-Men film Days Of Future Past, due out in May, stars Hugh Jackman returning to his role of Wolverine, who is sent back in time to try to prevent a disaster for humans and mutants.
It also welcomes back stars Jennifer Lawrence, Sir Ian McKellen, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Fassbender.
Both superhero franchises also have future films lined up - The Fantastic Four, featuring a new, yet-to-be-announced cast, is due out in 2015 and X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 so it looks like the combined film wouldn't be released until at least 2017.
