Field: My slog for Lincoln role

Sally Field plays Abraham Lincoln's wife Mary Todd Lincloln in Spielberg's new biopic

Sally Field has revealed her long, hard fight to land a role in Lincoln.

The veteran actress plays the US president's wife Mary Todd Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's biopic, which stars Daniel Day Lewis in the title role.

Sally - who at 66 is 20 years older than the character she plays - revealed an initial screen test on her own for the role proved unsuccessful until My Left Foot actor Daniel got on a plane to meet her.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: "Daniel, out of the generous graciousness of his heart, flew in from Ireland and I tested with him. We did some bizarre improv, it was early in the process but I became Mary and he became Mr Lincoln, the most bizarre improv in the history of time for about an hour.

"And we both sort of took off, I said thank you very much everybody, thank you for the opportunity, I drove home thinking, 'Well I've done what I needed to do and when someone else gets it, I will say good luck to her, I did everything that I could.'

"When I got home, the phone was ringing and Steven and Daniel were on it, saying, 'Will you be Mary?'"

Don't let a manipulator take advantage of you. Someone with a sob story will ask for money or favours. Be prepared to turn them away. Although you want to be gracious, it simply isn't wise to give assistance to people with bad motives. Other people have warned you about this trickster. Take their advice. There's often a good reason why a person has a bad reputation. If anyone dares accuse you of being selfish, stay strong. You have a right to use your hard earned money for your own benefit.More
