Ralph Fiennes has joked that he is too old to play MI6 agent James Bond.

The 49-year-old, who has six years on current star Daniel Craig, admitted he was once interested in portraying the secret agent.

"There was a time in my life when that would have appealed to me. But I'm a bit on the old side now," he told the Daily Mail.

Ralph has been cast in the upcoming 23rd Bond film Skyfall, alongside Naomie Harris, Ben Chaplin, Judi Dench, Berenice Marlohe, Helen McCroy, and Albert Finney.

Directed by Sam Mendes, the highly-anticipated film will be released in October.

"I'm allowed to say that I'm a government agent," the actor revealed.

He also confessed to being a huge fan of the original spy novels by Ian Fleming.

"I used to be a complete nerd about the books and the detail in them. They are fantastic," he continued.

"There was [Ian] Fleming's obsession with different kinds of champagne and caviar. He kind of fetishises these things."
