Zack Snyder has revealed he is hoping his Superman reboot turns out to be a "giant 'movie' movie".
The filmmaker gave fans a sneak peek of Man Of Steel at the ComicCon convention in Las Vegas, which included panoramic aerial battles on Krypton, touching moments between a young Clark Kent and both his biological and adoptive fathers and lots of big-budget flying.
"I wanted the movie to be a big movie-going experience, full of action, full of emotion and full of the biggest superhero in the world," Zack said.
"I wanted to give to the cinemas of the world a big, giant 'movie' movie."
Zack said he wanted to find a poignancy to add to the familiar story, which he has been a fan of all his life.
"He is the greatest superhero. There's no competition between superheroes, but if there was, he'd win," he said.
Man Of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Superman's adoptive parents.
The movie is due to open later this year.
