Former MP Lembit Opik to become first-time dad at 52
Northern Ireland-born former politician Lembit Opik is to become a dad for the first time at the age of 53, despite fears he was unable to have children.
The Liberal-Democrat member - who was born in Bangor, Co Down - will welcome his first child with Bulgarian lawyer Sabina Vankova (33) in two months.
The announcement comes despite Opik's fears he was sterile after impaling himself on a tree when he was six.
The former I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here contestant was previously engaged to both weathergirl Sian Lloyd and Cheeky Girls singer Gabriela Irimia. Both women suffered miscarriages during their relationships with Öpik.
Speaking about becoming a father, he told the Daily Mirror: "I get emotional about it all the time. The arrival of our baby is compellingly exciting.
"I've wanted to have kids for a long time. It's an emotive, uplifting, hope-making feeling.
He added: "In 1971, I had a very serious accident when I fell 10ft out of a tree, impaled myself on a stick and damaged my personal parts. That could have meant that I was sterile.
"I've twice been in situations where I tried to have children, which both ended in miscarriage. I didn't want to talk about this pregnancy until I was sure things would be OK."
Opik met Vankova in July 2015 at a Liberal Democrat party. She became pregnant in September last year.
