Foster and O'Dowd in Armstrong film

Ben Foster has been confirmed to play Lance Armstrong alongside Chris O'Dowd as the journalist who helped expose the doping scandal in a new Stephen Frears film, according to reports.

Bridesmaids star Chris will play journalist David Walsh in the movie, from the British filmmaker behind The Queen, Deadline said.

US actor Ben, who starred in Western 3:10 To Yuma and TV show Six Feet Under, was previously tipped to star in the Working Title movie about the disgraced Tour de France champion.

Now he's been confirmed, alongside French actor Guillaume Canet and Breaking Bad's Jesse Plemons in supporting roles, Deadline said.

The film is based on sportswriter David Walsh's book Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit Of Lance Armstrong.

It covers Lance's rise to success as a cyclist, his battle with testicular cancer and the performance-enhancing drugs scandal that led to his downfall.

Warner Bros has a rival film about the cyclist in the works.
