James Franco will play Robert Mapplethorpe on the big screen

James Franco looks set to play controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in a new movie.

The film about the life of the late photographer - who died of AIDS in 1989 at the age of 42 - has been selected as one of the projects to receive grants through the Tribeca Film Institute's 9th annual Tribeca All Access Programme, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Eliza Dushku, Nate Dushku and Miles Levy will produce Mapplethorpe, while Ondi Timoner will direct.

It won't be the first time James, 33, has portrayed a real life character on the big screen. The star played gay rights activist Scott Smith in Milk and starred as mountain climber Aron Ralston in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours.
