Gervais: I'm a failed pop star

Ricky Gervais says he loved singing in Muppets Most Wanted

Ricky Gervais has said he loved being able to sing in Muppets Most Wanted because he feels he is a failed pop star.

The comedian plays a criminal mastermind in the new Muppets film and told Collider he had no problem with the musical numbers, which were written by Flight Of The Conchords' Bret McKenzie.

He said: "Well, I was OK with singing. I'm a failed pop star. I always sneak a song into everything I do. But my dancing is a little awkward. I'm a little embarrassed about that. I don't move well.

"But I was with a frog (Kermit), so it didn't matter. I'll do anything with a frog. That's my motto. And he was a great tap dancer. Well, more of a flap dancer. He was flap dancing on my head. So, no one's going to be looking at me when we're doing that dance. They're going to say, 'There's a frog dancing.' That's what's going to be happening. So, I got away with it."

However, co-star Tina Fey wasn't as confident about her singing abilities: "My singing sounds like, if you've ever seen the movie version of Oliver!, when the little boy sings and you can hear the hiss from how loud they had to turn up the microphone. My singing sounds like that."

Modern Family star Ty Burrell also appears as a French detective.

He said: "America, and the world, were spared my singing voice, except for two notes. I don't know if you noticed that, but I think it was by design. I spoke my song, but I was thrilled to do it. I'm a huge fan of Bret McKenzie."
